The aim of the communication studies major program is for students to become adaptable and resourceful communicators across a wide variety of contexts (e.g., interpersonal, global, organizational, mass mediated), and to understand communication not only as a practice, but also as a reflective inquiry into that practice.
The program stresses fundamental capacities for expression and comprehension, including learning how to analyze difficult texts, articulate nuanced questions, assess visual and other nonverbal appeals, cultivate aesthetic and ethical sensibilities, design clear and informative messages, build engaging persuasive appeals, and develop critical sensitivities to the persuasive appeals of others. Students choose from either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Visit www.gvsu.edu/soc for details.
